Each Sentence below has one or two blanks, each indicating that something has been omitted. Beneath the sentence are five lettered words or sets of words. Choose the word or set that best fits
1. To the cynic, there are no wholly altruistic, unselfish acts; every human deed is ------------- an ulterior selfish motive.
A. independent of
B. emulated by
C. disguised as
D. founded upon
E. similar to
Level: easy
Correct Answer:D
2. Like the theory of evolution, the big-bang model of the universe’s formation has undergone modifications and --------, but it has ------------all serious challenges.
A. alteration…confirmed
B. refinement…resisted
C. transformation…ignored
D. evaluation…acknowledged
E. refutation…misdirected
Level: easy
Correct Answer: B
3. Her concern for the earthquake victims _________ her reputation as a callous person.
A. restored
B. rescinded
C. created
D. proved
E. belied
Correct: E
Level: Easy
Exp: Callous means unfeeling, uncaring, but if this person has concern for the earthquake victims, her reputation must be an unfounded one, so the correct choice will mean contradicted or proved false. This is one of the meanings of belied, correct choice E. B, rescinded is the second best answer. It means revoked or withdrawn, but you don't say that a reputation is rescinded. A, C, and D are the opposite of what we're looking for — they don't make sense in this context.
4. The author presumably believes that all businessmen are _________, for her main characters, whatever qualities they may lack, are virtual paragons of _________.
A. clever . . . ingenuity
B. covetous . . . greed
C. virtuous . . . deceit
D. successful . . . ambition
E. cautious . . . achievement
Correct: A
Level: medium
Exp: The author mentioned in this sentence believes that businessmen are models of some quality; whatever qualities they may lack implies that whatever bad points they possess, there's this one particular good thing about them. All of this should lead you to A — if an author's main characters are businessmen, and if they're all paragons of "ingenuity" (meaning inventively talented), one chould easily be led to the presumption that the author thinks all businessmen are "clever."
In each of the following questions 3-4, a related pair of words or phrases is followed by four lettered pairs of words or phrases. Select the lettered pair that best expresses a relationship similar to that expressed in the original pair
5. SCURRY : MOVE ::
(a) chant : sing
(b) chatter : talk
(c) sleep : drowse
(d) carry : lift
(e) limp: walk
Level: easy
Correct Answer: B
6. SKIRT: ISSUE::
A. vest: interest
B. rig: wager
C. dodge:encounter
D. sweep: election
E. mask: purpose
Level: hard
Correct Answer: C
7. RELEVANT : CRUCIAL ::
A. marginal : unique
B. perceptible : obvious
C. apparent : real
D. peripheral : central
E. possible : desirable
Correct Answer: B
Level: Medium
Explanation:Something "relevant" has a bearing on a matter under consideration but it may be of great or little importance. Something "crucial" is relevant and has the highest degree of importance. A rationale for this analogy could be something properly described as Y is X to a very high degree. Something properly described as "obvious" is "perceptible" to a very high degree: it is easy to perceive.
8. ATTENTIVE : OFFICIOUS ::
A. doubtful : ambiguous
B. absorbed : engrossed
C. refined : snobbish
D. magisterial : authoritative
E. impromptu : spontaneous
Correct Answer: C
Level: medium
Explanation: To be "officious" is a way of being "attentive," but it implies being "attentive" in a way that is unwelcome to others. A rationale for this analogy could be " to be Y is to be X in a way that is unwelcome to others". One who is "snobbish" wishes to be thought "refined," and in acting "refined" is offensive to others.
In the long run a government will always encroach upon freedom to the extent to which it has the power to do so; this is almost a natural law of politics, since whatever the intentions of the men who exercise political power, the sheer momentum of government leads to a constant pressure upon the liberties of the citizen. But in many countries society has responded by throwing up its own defenses in the shape of social classes or organized corporations which, enjoying economic power and popular support, have been able to set limits to the scope of action of the executive. Such, for example, in England was the origin of all of our liberties--won from government by the stand of the first and federal nobility, then of churches and political parties and latterly of trade unions, commercial organizations, and the societies for promoting various causes. Even in European lands which were arbitrarily ruled, the powers of the monarchy, though absolute in theory, were in their exercise checked in a similar fashion. Indeed, the fascist dictatorship of today are the first truly tyrannical governments which western Europe has known for centuries, and they have been rendered possible only because on coming to power they destroyed all forms of social organization which were in any way rivals to the state.
9. According to the passage, the natural relationship between government and individual liberty is one of
A. marked indifference
B. secret collusion
C. inherent opposition
D. moderate complicity
E. fundamental interdependence

A. setting limits to their scope of action
B. effecting results by sheer momentum
C. rivaling the state in power
D. exerting constant pressure on liberties
E. eradicating people's organizations
Level: Easy
Correct Answer: E
11. The passage suggests which of the following about fascist dictatorships?
A. They represent a more efficient form of the executive.
B. Their rise to power came about through an accident of history
C. They mark a regression to earlier despotic forms of government
D. Despite superficial dissimilarities, they are in essence like absolute monarchies.

No very satisfactory account of the mechanism that caused the formation of the ocean basins has yet been given. The traditional view supposes that the upper mantle of the earth behaves as a liquid when it is subjected to small forces for long periods and those differences in temperature under oceans and continents are sufficient to produce convection in the mantle of the earth with rising convection currents under the mid-ocean ridges and sinking currents under the continents. Theoretically, this convection would carry the continental plates along as though they were on a conveyor belt and would provide the forces needed to produce the split that occurs along the ridge. This view may be correct: it has the advantage that the currents are driven by temperature differences thatthemselves depend on the position of the continents. Such a back-coupling, in which the position of the moving plate has an impact on the forces that move it,could produce complicated and varying motions.
On the other hand, the theory is implausible because convection does not normally occur along lines and it certainly does not occur alonglines broken by frequent offsets or changes in direction, as the ridge is. Also, it is difficult to seehow the theory applies to the plate between the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the ridge in the Indian Ocean. This plate is growing on both sides, and since there is no intermediate trench, the two ridges must be moving apart. It would be odd ifthe rising convection currents kept exact pace with them. An alternative theory is that the sinking part of the plate, which is denser than the hotter surrounding mantle, pulls the rest of the plate after it. Again it is difficult to see how this applies to the ridge in the South Atlantic, where neither the African nor the American plate has asinking part.
Another possibility is that the sinking plate cools the neighboring mantle and produces convection currents that move the plates. This last theory is attractive because it gives some hope of explaining the enclosed seas, such as the Sea of Japan. These seas have a typical oceanic floor, except that the floor is overlaid by several kilometers of sediment. Their floors have probably been sinking for long periods. It seems possible that a sinking current of cooled mantle material on the upper side of the plate might be the cause of such deep basins. The enclosed seas are an important feature of the earth's surface, and seriously require explanation in because, addition to the enclosed seas that are developing at present behind island arcs, there are a number of older ones of possibly similar origin, such as theGulf of Mexico, the Black Sea, and perhaps the North Sea.

I am sitting in a chair next to Momma’s bed. I am watching her get ready for a party. She opens the beautiful jewelry box on her dressing table. It is the size of a shoebox. It is wooden. It has colorful stones on top. They are red, green, yellow, and blue. To me, the box looks magical. 1. During the period of 1995 and 2000, the total no of operators who left the company is what percent of the total number of Operators who joined the company?
A. 19%
B. 21%
C. 27%
D. 29%
E. 32%
Ans: D
Explanation: Total no. of operators who left the company during 1996 to 2000
= (104 + 120 + 100 + 112 + 144) = 580.
Total No. of Operators who joined the company during 1996 to 2000
= (880 + 256 + 240 + 208 + 192 + 248) = 2024.
Hence, required Percentage = (580/2024 * 100) = 28.66% = 29%
2. For which of the following categories the percentage increase in the number of employees working in the company from 1996 to 2000 was maximum?
A. Managers
B. Technicians
C. Operators
D. Accountants
E. Peons.

5. What is the pooled average of all employees in the year 1997?
A. 1325
B. 1285
C. 1265
D. 1235
E. 1195
Ans: E
Explanation:Managers: (760 + 280 + 179) – (120 + 92) = 1007
Technicians: (1200 + 272 + 240) – (120 + 128) = 1464
Operators: (880 +256 +240) – (104 + 120) = 1152
Accountants: (1160 +200 +224) – (100 + 104) = 1380
Peons: (820 + 184 + 152) – (96 + 88) = 972
Hence pooled average of 5 categories = (1007 + 1464 + 1152 + 1380 + 972)/5 = 1195
